What they look like:   Low , Greyish Clouds

Where they are seen:   Between ground level and  about 2 km above sea level

What they do:   may produce drizzle

 

Cumulus:

What they look like:   Fluffy, White piles

Where they are seen:   between 1 and 2.5 km above the ground

What they do:   Often evaporate;  sometimes turn into cumulonimbus clouds

 

Stratocumulus:

What they look like:   broad and flat at the bottom and fluffy on the top

Where they are seen:   between 1 and 2.5 km above the earth’s surface

What they do:  produce drizzling rain

 

Altocumulus:

Where they are seen:  between 2.5 and 6 km above the ground 

What they do:   produce light showers

 

Cumulonimbus:

What they look like:   huge, thick clouds

Where they are seen:   from near the ground to about 16 km above the earth

What they do:   produce electric storms, heavy rain, snow and tornadoes

 

Cirrus:

What they look like:   delicate, wispy fronds made of ice crystals

Where they are seen:   between 10 and 12 km above the earth

What they do:   blown about by strong winds; produce no precipitation

nimbus — rain
