Multiplication of decimals

 

By whole numbers:

1. Multiply the numbers as if they are whole numbers.

2. Put a decimal point in the answer so that there are equal decimal places in the question and answer.

Example:       4.17  ×   3   =   12.51

 

By powers of 10:

By multiples of 10:

1. Multiply the numbers ignoring the zeroes.

2. Move the decimal point in the answer to the right, equal to the number of zeroes in the multiplier.

Example :   6.5   ×   7000   =   45.5  ∩∩∩   =   45500

 

By other decimals:

1. Multiply the numbers as if they are whole numbers.

2. Count the total number of decimal places in the question.

3. The answer must also have the same number of decimal places as in step 2.
