Decimals

 

Decimals help us to use numbers less than one. Decimals are separated  from whole numbers by a decimal point.

The number   127.5369   has  4  decimal places. It can be represented in the following ways:

 

In place value table form:

In expanded fractional form:

127  +  5/10  +  3/100  +  6/1000  +  9/10 000

 

In expanded word form:

one hundred,  two tens,  seven units,  five tenths,  three  hundredths,  six  thousandths  and  nine  ten-thousandths.

 

In a number like  0.207  , the zero is called a place holding zero.
